Lunaria
timepass game, 2018
An oak frame wrapped in a sheet of rice paper hides a small stone that is free to move on the surface of an intermediate layer of paper with a hole in it. The game aims at making the stone fall into the hole without the player being able to see the position of the two elements. To play it, one must rely on the sounds produced by the stone rubbing on the paper and will therefore need to find a quiet place, away from distractions, where to use all senses to grasp the subtlest sound vibrations. The game thus opens up to a meditative moment in which the rustle of the stone rolling on the paper and the physical contact with natural materials help to regenerate one's senses.

Lunaria
How it's made
The materials were selected for their structural, acoustic and sensorial properties: the solid oak frame allows the intermediate layer to maintain tension and function much like the skin of a drum, while rice paper was chosen for its high resistance and peculiar roughness, necessary to generate the rustle when rubbed.
Lunaria
How does it work
Lunaria is a closed, mysterious volume. When placed against the light, the transparency of the paper allows to glimpse at the position of the hole and the stone, but one can only play by holding the game in a horizontal position. With a slight inclination, the stone will slide on the rough paper, producing a slight rustle. It is only by paying close attention that one will be able to hear a slight thud at some point, preceded by a moment of silence: the sound of the stone falling into the hole. By turning the board upside down, one can go again, listening to the rustle, waiting for that same moment.
